TAMPA - Many of the finest moments in the area's cultural history have come from the mouths of the Master Chorale of Tampa Bay, the area's acclaimed choir. Whether on its own or matched up with The Florida Orchestra, the group has played an enormous part in helping define the local arts, as well as giving music lovers nourishment over three decades.
So what's ahead? Today we release the choir's 30th anniversary season, with productions under the guidance of music director Richard Zielinski.
Sept. 19-20 - The Festival of Voices brings together the chorus with 300 high school singers in a program that emphasizes color and texture, both through modern and classic pieces.
Nov. 1-2 - The chorus celebrates what would have been the 90th birthday of the American icon Leonard Bernstein, featuring the "Chichester Psalms," "Missa Brevis," and selections from the Mass and "Candide."
Dec. 5-6 - The annual Christmas with The Master Chorale is one of the area's most anticipated holiday programs, a night of traditional favorites and selections from Handel's "Messiah."
March 6-8 - It's been six years since the choir tackled Verdi's Requiem, a work of enormous power and influence, and this collaboration with The Florida Orchestra promises to be a season highlight.
May 15-17 - The symphonies of Gustav Mahler continue to be major events in any concert hall, and next year the choir wraps up The Florida Orchestra season with Mahler's magnificent, and monolithic, Symphony No. 2.
