BRANDON – A couple got a rude awakening this morning when someone crashed a convertible through their backyard fence and into their pool.
Wanda Usner said she and her husband woke to a loud boom about 5 a.m. Her husband got out of bed and looked out a window to see what happened. While she called 911, he went outside to see whether the people in the white Ford Mustang were hurt.
"They took off running," Usner said. "He said, 'Wait,' but they didn't say nothing."
The convertible had been traveling on Lumsden Road when it turned south on Heather Lakes Boulevard and then made a hard left through a fence behind 1438 Foxboro Drive, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies are searching for the man and woman seen running away, soaking wet.
The car has been removed, but the couple's pool water is contaminated with gas and oil and their fence and landscaping have been destroyed, Usner said.
Investigators told Usner they don't think the car was stolen and are looking for its owner, she said.
"I'm kind of depressed right now," she said. "If he doesn't have insurance, I'm going to have to pay my deductible to get it fixed."
