ST. PETERSBURG - The franchise firsts keep piling up for the 2008 Rays.
They added another one Monday when Scott Kazmir was named the American League Pitcher of the Month for May, becoming the first Tampa Bay player to earn an MLB monthly award besides Rookie of the Month.
Kazmir went 5-1 with a 1.22 ERA in six starts last month, striking out 38 in 37 innings.
His worst start was his season debut, May 4 at Fenway Park, where Kazmir struggled through four innings as he returned from an elbow strain. In five starts since, the left-hander has allowed only two runs and 16 hits over 33 innings while picking up a victory each time out.
"It's a nice honor," Kazmir said in a statement provided by the Rays. "Everything is coming along well and my arm strength is getting better. I've got great defense behind me. I hope to continue to progress as the season goes on."
