"Top Chef: Finale, Part 1," 10 tonight, Bravo
Now that former Clearwater Beach resident Spike Mendelsohn is out of the way - see today's Stew column on Page 2 - the four finalists head south to Puerto Rico for the first episode of a two-part finale. Now the real cooking can begin. Curiously, the previews show Lisa without her iconic head scarf. Apparently the bandana was confiscated at customs for having soaked up too much antipathy.
"Secret Life of ... Picnics," 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Food Network
Last week, a friend told us about an acquaintance who wouldn't use the word picnic because it was derived from a racist term. Turns out that juicy morsel of information was an urban legend transmitted in an e-mail hoax during the late 1990s. We can't guarantee this show will be chock-full of weird goodies like that, but it will include a look at regional twists on outdoor dining.
"Hammer Heads," 10:30 a.m. Saturday, HGTV
In this episode, a home's underutilized study is converted into a wine cellar. Now, why didn't we think of that? For that matter, why stop at the study? Crank the AC down and turn the whole house into a wine chateau, we say. Of course, that might not go over so well with the spouse.
"Iron Chef: America," 9 p.m. Sunday, Food Network
We've been fascinated in recent years by the dishes concocted by Ethiopian-born New York chef Marcus Samuelsson of Aquavit restaurant. Should be fun to see his international palate go head-to-head with the king of Southwestern flavors, Bobby Flay.
