Summer Camps Cover Many Interests

SUMMER CAMPS

COUNTY PARKS

Summer day camps offer sports, swimming, games, field trips, arts and crafts, movies, talent performances, weekly themes and special events for children ages 5 (and completed kindergarten) to 13. Camps run Monday through Friday, June 23 through Aug. 1; no camp July 4.

The county Parks and Recreation Department's three largest facilities are: Holiday Recreation Complex, 2830 Gulf Trace Blvd., Holiday; Land O' Lakes Recreation Complex, 3032 Collier Parkway, Land O' Lakes; and Veterans Memorial Park, 14333 Hicks Road, Hudson. Each camp costs $30 a week, plus field trips, and accommodates 200 children. Camp runs 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The department also will offer camps at:

• The Land O' Lakes Community Center, 5401 Land O' Lakes Blvd., Land O' Lakes, can accommodate 40 children and cost $20 a child, per week, plus field trips. Camp runs 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Odessa Park Community Center, 1627 Chesapeake Drive, Odessa, can accommodate 40 children at a cost of $20 a child, per week, plus field trips.

Shady Hills Community Center, 15840 Greenglen Lane, Shady Hills, will offer a camp at a cost of $20 a week, per child, plus field trips. Forty children can be accommodated each week. Camp runs 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Rodney B. Cox Elementary School, 37615 Martin Luther King Blvd., Dade City, can accommodate 100 children; no cost for participation; field trips additional. Camp runs 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Centennial Middle School, 38505 Centennial Road, Dade City, can accommodate 100 children and cost $20 a child, per week, plus field trips. Camp runs 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

James Irvin Civic Center, 38122 Martin Luther King Blvd., Dade City, can accommodate 60 children; no cost for this camp, plus field trips. Camp runs 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Lacoochee Elementary School, 38815 Cummer Road, Dade City, can accommodate 100 children; no cost for this camp. Camp runs 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

NATURE CAMPS

The Pasco Parks and Recreation Department will offer the Science Ecology and Environment program nature camp 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays in the Starkey Environmental Education Center and on the grounds at Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Park, 10500 Wilderness Park Road, New Port Richey. The Starkey camp is June 23 to Aug. 1. Cost is $45 per week per child.

DADE CITY'S WILD THINGS: will host Summer Camp at the Zoo. Zoo themes will be: African Safari, in which participants will go on a safari and explore animals from the savanna; Florida Natives, with campers discovering inhabitants of the Sunshine State; and Monkeying Around, a camp devoted to the mysteries of nonhuman primates. One-day camps will be June 25 and July 9. Three-day camps will be June 24 through 26 and July 8 through 10. Camps will take place 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fees are $65 a child for the one-day camps or $165 a child for the three-day camp. The fees include a T-shirt that must be worn during the camp. Special events for preschool students, ages 3 through 5, also will be available. These one-day camps will be 1½ to 2 hours and offered more frequently. Space is limited to 25 participants a day. Registration is required a week before class. The cost is $20 per child and includes a child and an adult. An adult must accompany the child. For information, call (352) 567-9453.

JAMES P. GILLS FAMILY YMCA: 8411 Photonics Drive, New Port Richey, will offer an array of summer day camps and larger camps Monday to Aug. 15. These camps, which range in cost from $47 to $297 a week, offer a variety of camp activities and address subjects from sports adventure to medieval times, fashion to tennis, teen camps to girls-only camps. NEW PORT RICHEY SUNTRUST BRANCH YMCA: 6130 U.S.19, New Port Richey, will offer summer day camps and larger camps Monday to Aug. 15. These camps, which range in cost from $47 to $297 a week, offer a variety of activities and address subjects from cheerleading to creative arts, drama and dance to painting, gymnastics to world culture camps. YMCA CAMP McCONNELL: The Micanopy facility will offer a residential camp June 8 to Aug. 16 for ages 7 to 16. The camp will offer sports, archery, horseback riding, trail and ropes activities, dance and drama, arts and crafts and more. Campers can choose their activities. SCOUT CAMPS

THE BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA, WEST CENTRAL FLORIDA COUNCIL: The group will offer an overnight camp featuring a variety of activities and meals in air-conditioned dining halls for middle-school age Boy Scouts from June 15 to July 5. The camp will be at Sand Hill Scout Reservation in Brooksville.

The Cub Scout Council will host day camps June 16 to 20 at Frances Avenue Park in New Port Richey. This camp appeals to grade-school age Cub Scouts.

THE GIRL SCOUTS OF SUNCOAST COUNCIL: The group offers day and resident camps, with activities including sports, science, swimming, art, photography, drama, business, cooking and equestrian skills. The length and cost of the camps vary, and camp subjects include "CSI," "Iron Chef" and "Survivor" themes.

At Camp Southcrest in Odessa, the Nature Seeker residential camp includes outdoor exploration to promote environmental education. Intended for girls in grades four through 12, the camp will run in separate sessions July 13 to 18 and July 19 to 24 at a cost of $290 per session.

The council also offers summer day camps. Students ages 5 through 18 are invited to attend Camp Cotee at Starkey Park in New Port Richey from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to 13. Activities include arts and crafts, games, science, dance and music at a cost of $70 per camper.

Scoutcrest Day Camp in Odessa will offer a Winter Wonderland day camp from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 4 to 8. Swimming and water activities, along with arts and crafts, ceramics, and science and nature activities will be offered at a cost of $80 per camper.

MARTIAL ARTS CAMPS

ELITE ACADEMY OF MARTIAL ARTS: 7906 Land O' Lakes Blvd., Land O' Lakes, will offer a blended curriculum including muay Thai boxing, western boxing, Wing Chun, kung fu, Filipino stick fighting (kali), Indonesian pentjak silat, Bruce Lee's original jeet kune do concepts, jun fan (gung fu). Instructor Paul Amato teaches Hollywood-style karate and screens martial arts movies at this camp, which will run 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The cost is $150 a week. SUNCOAST TANG SOO DO: 8351 State Road 54, New Port Richey, will offer a ceramics camp for ages 11 and older from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 21 to 25 or 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Aug. 4 to 8 for ages 11 and older at a cost of $65 a week plus a $10 supply fee; a painting class is set for 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 14 to 18 for ages 8 and older at a cost of $65 a week plus a $5 supply fee; a Tang Soo Do karate class for ages 8 to 14 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or July 28 to Aug. 1 at a cost of $65 a week. PREMIER MARTIAL ARTS, 27427 State Road 54 (at S.R. 54 and Interstate 75), Wesley Chapel, will offer a martial arts day camp 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Aug. 15 (camp will be closed July 4 through 6). Karate, swimming, movies and field trips will be offered for $179 a week for nonmembers or $149 a week for members. The emphasis of the camp is setting and achieving goals, learning to avoid and cope with dangerous situations, and stopping bullying. PREMIER MARTIAL ARTS, 22952 State Road 54, Land O' Lakes, will offer summer theme camps Monday through Aug. 15. A variety of skills will be covered in this camp, which will revolve around the themes XMA (Extreme Martial Arts) Performance Camp, Summer Sword Camp, Premier Martial Arts Around the World and Camp Warrior; prices vary. INGRAM'S PROFESSIONAL KARATE, 4116 Little Road, New Port Richey, will host three one-week camps, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 16 to20, July 21 to 25 and Aug. 11 to 15 at a cost of $165 a week or $40 a day. The summer karate camp will offer karate classes, an "unbirthday" party to celebrate member birthdays, weapons and board breaking, a field day, a trip to the movies and a trip to Celebration Station. KYOKUSHIN KARATE ACADEMY, 5157 Gall Blvd., Zephyrhills, will offer a karate camp four times a week, Monday until the end of summer. It will offer karate lessons, swimming, movies, fitness, self-defense and confidence-building activities and field trips. The camp costs $75 a week for one child, $25 discount for siblings. SHOTOKAN KARATE-DO, KEIKO SHIN KARATE ACADEMY, 26312 Wesley Chapel Blvd., Land O' Lakes, will offer a summer day camp that will feature daily martial arts classes, fear factor challenges, weekly field trips, dancing contests, a talent show, karaoke and movies. ARTS CAMPS

CONTEMPO SCHOOL OF DANCE: 24148 State Road 54, Land O' Lakes, will offer a variety of camps, including a new sports movement camp for boys age 6 to 11, from 9 to 11 a.m. July 7 to 11 that will teach agility, flexibility, games, skits, sports, crafts, hip hop and tumbling (tuition is $75); a musical theater workshop for ages 7 and older that will emphasize acting, voice, musical theater, improvisation and theatrical choreography from 9 a.m. to noon July 14 to 18 (tuition is $115); a minicamp with a Princess for a Week adventure theme for ages 3 to 5 from 9 to 11 a.m. July 7 to 11 and July 21 to 25 (tuition is $75); a summer camp will emphasize dance for children ages 5 through 13 (divided into three groups) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 14 to 18 (tuition is $115); a dance team camp for current and prospective team members from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 28 through Aug. 1 (tuition is $125). Each camp or workshop will have a show for parents on the last day. A $50 nonrefundable deposit is due at registration. The balance is due the first day of camp. KELLY'S DANCE ACADEMY: Dance Camp is available for ages 7 through 16 who are looking to excel in the art of dance. The academy is at 8351 State Road 54, Suite 112, Trinity, in the Brodell Plaza.

Summer Camp Intensives are held weekly June 23 through Aug. 15. Sign up for any or all of the weekly themed sessions. Additional sessions may be added without penalty if space permits. The first week tuition is due at registration. There is a $25 registration fee for those who are not academy students ($10 fee for additional siblings, with a maximum family registration fee of $35).

Weekly camp fees are one to two weeks, $100; three to four weeks, $95; five to six weeks, $90; and seven to eight weeks, $80.

PEGGY'S DANCE PLACE: 36751 State Road 54, Zephyrhills. The school, which specializes in tap, jazz and ballet, Latin dance, clogging and singing, will offer a summer dance camp July 28 to 31 from 9 a.m. for children ages 3 through 5 at a cost of $35; and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for ages 6 and older for a cost of $85. BLACKWOOD STUDIOS: 37747 Meridian Ave., Dade City. From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 7 to 18, students in grades kindergarten and higher can learn dance skills, including ballet, jazz, modern and pointe, as well as musical theater, voice training, and arts and crafts. Students will prepare a special presentation for their parents. Also, at the same time, a preschool pre-ballet minicamp will be offered from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. FLOW YOGA: 7711 Grand Blvd., Port Richey, Kids' Yoga sessions will be offered June 11 to 27 and July 9 to 25, Wednesday and Friday afternoons, noon to 1 p.m. for 4- through 8-year-olds and 1:30-2:30 p.m. for 9- through 15-year-olds. For information, call (727) 848-7283.

For $90 a week, parents can accompany their children to participate in separate adult and children's yoga sessions (children's yoga consists of games, animal poses and other yoga skills) or can drop the children off for $40 a week.

MARY JO'S PERFORMING ARTS ACADEMY: Wesley Chapel campus, 4575-B Pet Lane, will offer performing arts camp samplers the weeks of Monday, June 16, July 7, July 14, July 21 and July 28. Both camps will offer dance, acting and voice.

The Wiggle and Giggle camp targets pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students. It will run in sessions from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1 to 3:30 p.m. at a cost of $165 a week, with 10 percent discounts for extra weeks.

The Shining Stars camp will be geared to students in grades one through eight, and will run 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in all-day sessions at a cost of $250 a week, with 10 percent discounts for extra weeks.

GOTTA DANCE: 8738 U.S. 19 N., Port Richey, offers the American Girls Theatre Workshop that will focus on acting, singing, acting, dance and crafts. Set for June 23 to July 31, the workshop is based on The American Girl stories. The camp will meet from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Monday and 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday during these weeks at a cost of $20 a week for one session or $25 a week for two sessions. HARMONY STUDIOS: The studio, 4818 Mile Stretch Drive, Holiday, will offer summer dance camps Monday to 13, June 16 to 20, July 14 to 18, July 21 to 25 and July 28 through Aug. 1 (August camps to be announced) in morning sessions from 9 a.m. to noon and afternoon sessions from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The camps are intended for ages 6 and older at a cost of $20 a session or $75 a week. Classes will focus on beginner yoga, ballet, jazz and tap.

RICHEY SUNCOAST THEATRE: The theater, 6237 Grand Blvd., New Port Richey, will offer a children's theater workshop Tuesday to June 14 to teach acting, dancing, vocals, costumes, technical theater and set decoration, and will meet from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. SHOWCASE THEATRE: The theater, 8431 Corporate Way, New Port Richey, will offer classes from Monday to July 2, with meeting times set by class. Classes offered are Playtime Theater, open to ages 8 through 18, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., $350; Hip-Hop for beginners, ages 8 through 12, 2:15 to 3:30 p.m., $150; Acting for the Camera, ages 8 through 18, 2:15 to 3:30 p.m., $150; Improvisation for the Theatre, ages 8 through 18, 2:15 to 3:30 p.m., $150; Hip-Hop for intermediates, ages 13 through 18, 3:45 to 5 p.m., $150; and Acting for the Theatre, ages 8 through 18, 3:45 to 5 p.m., $150.

ARTS IN MOTION: Alice in Wonderland will be the theme of this year's summer camp hosted by Arts in Motion, a community youth theatre and arts group. The camp is for boys and girls in grades first through eighth and will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 23 to 27 at the East Pasco Adventist Academy on Centennial Road. Participants will learn how a production is put together from start to finish as they learn their roles and work on sets, costumes and props. Also featured will be classes in dance, voice and acting, along with crafts and theater games. The final production for parents will be at 4:30 p.m. June 27. Snacks will be provided daily, with lunch provided the last day. The fee is $145, which includes yearly AIM membership through June 2009 and a camp T-shirt. Payment is due at time of registration. MUSIC MATTERS, 4112 Little Road, Trinity, will offer Summer MusiCamp all summer beginning Monday. Open to ages 5 through 15, the camp will run 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Children will learn about pianos, guitars, harmonicas, singing, keyboards, music videos and appreciation, musical games and computer games, and "Rock Band" activities. The cost is $30 a day, $120 for a week or $100 for additional weeks; weekly enrollment is limited to 15. For information, call (727) 834-8856.
