Events

NATIVE PLANT WEEKEND: The Butterfly, Herb & Native Plant Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 14 and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 15 at USF Botanical Gardens.

Dozens of vendors will sell butterfly plants, herbs and related items. Members of the Suncoast Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society will be on hand with growing tips.

The Butterfly House will be open, and Nature's Classroom will have a wildlife display.

Free talks on June 14 include:

10 a.m. - Creating a Backyard Habitat, Laurie Walker, gardens director.

Noon - Native plants, George Kish, former president of the Suncoast Chapter.

Admission is $4 for adults and free for children younger than 12 and gardens members. For information, go to www.cas.usf.edu/garden.

PLANT SALE: The Horticultural Vocational Program of the Falkenburg Road Jail will hold a plant sale from 8 a.m. to noon June 13.

The sale will take place by the main entrance of the jail, 1201 Orient Road, Tampa.

All plants will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis.

The program is also in need of basic equipment such as containers, fertilizer, equipment, soil and books. Call Allen M. Boatman at (813) 744-5676 for information.

Meetings

VIOLETS: The Tampa African Violet Society will meet at 7 p.m. today at the Ragan Community Center, 1200 E. Lake Ave., Tampa.
Lynne Wilson will present "Strep Ta What?" a hands-on program featuring the African violet relative the streptocarpus. A plant drawing and refreshments are included at every meeting. Visitors are welcome.

PROGRAM ON SPRINGS: The Native Plant Society's Nature Coast Chapter will meet at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mark's Presbyterian Church, 7922 State Road 52, Hudson.

Ann Tihansky, a hydrologist with the U.S. Geological Survey at the Florida Integrated Science Center, will speak about springs, sinkholes and the Floridan aquifer. Call (727) 848-2177.

BROMELIADS: The Bromeliad Guild of Tampa Bay will meet at 7 p.m. June 16 at the Tampa Garden Center, 2625 Bayshore Blvd.

Jim Stewart will talk on "Understanding Neo-Color." The club also will have a sale, a plant drawing and refreshments. Call (813) 961-1475.
