TAMPA – The University of South Florida announced Thursday the hiring of Curtis Jones to direct its academic program for football as the Assistant Athletics Director for Football Student-Athlete Development.
Jones, who worked with the Oklahoma football team this past season, will work daily with USF's players and coaches, and oversee CHAMPS/LikeSkills and graduation initiatives.
USF had faced the loss of scholarships this school year because of the weakened academic performance of its football and baseball players in the NCAA's most recent Academic Progress Report (APR). But the NCAA decided to waive any sanctions, provided players on those teams showed progress for the 2007-08 school year.
"We were able to attract an individual with day-to-day advising and interpersonal experience from another BCS football program," Amy Haworth, USF's Associate Director of Athletics for Academics, said in a statement. "We expect his biggest impact to be in our long term planning for the APR and other major academic goals."
