Sarasota police have arrested a 29-year-old man, charging him with murder, robbery and false imprisonment in the March 20 slaying of a motel owner.
Police say Benjamin A. Rogers of 1616 25th St., Sarasota, killed Chester Jarosz, 60, and bound the victim's 85-year-old mother, Anna, with duct tape during a robbery at the Siesta Inn on North Tamiami Trail.
Anna Jarosz escaped in her nightgown after she was thrown into a bathroom, according to a probable-cause affidavit filed in connection with Rogers' arrest.
Rogers' DNA was found under Chester Jarosz' fingernails, and Rogers' blood was found on the inn office's inside doorknob, according to the affidavit. The office was ransacked during the crime, police said.
When the victim was found, his pants pocket had been pulled out and his wallet was missing, the affidavit states. He had suffered severe blunt force trauma to the face and head.
