LAND O' LAKES - For the first time in nearly a decade, the River Ridge girls basketball team will be led by a new face.
Donna Masterson was named the team's coach Thursday, beating out four others for the job. Masterson, a 1998 Springfield (Mass.) College graduate, replaces former coach Al Sorrentino, who was dismissed in February, at the end of the 2007-08 season. The Royal Knights went 6-36 over the past two seasons.
"We kind of were dragging it out because we had several people apply for it and we didn't have a teaching position available," athletic director Jack Homko said. "To try and match everything teaching-wise with a coaching supplement, that was a big thing. We wanted somebody within the school or who had been working with the school."
This will be the first high-school head coaching job for Masterson, who is a substitute teacher at the school. She previously has coached youth and AAU teams.
Masterson is prominent in the Springfield record book. She is No. 1 in 3-pointers made (110) and field-goal percentage (.409); second in 3-pointers attempted (269) and free throws made (391); third in scoring (1,384 points) and scoring average (14.0) and fourth in field goals made (492), among several other categories.
