HOLIDAY - As sheriff's Deputy Gary Carmen was heading into a left lane on northbound U.S. 19, he noticed a black Chevy S-10 pickup swerve from the center lane, nearly hitting his unmarked patrol car, a sheriff's office report states.

Carmen pulled into the turn lane at the Alternate U.S. 19 intersection and the truck continued tailgating him, according to the report. When the deputy stopped for the red light, the other driver pulled up beside him and yelled profanities.

That's when the incident became a traffic stop.

Carmen could smell a strong odor of alcohol on the driver's breath and noticed his eyes were glassy and bloodshot and his speech was slurred, according to the report.

Patrick Todd Wescoat agreed to take a breath test. The results were between 0.268 and 0.278. State law presumes intoxication at 0.08 percent.

Wescoat, of 3519 Westchester Drive, was arrested on a drunken driving charge. He was being held Thursday at Land O' Lakes Jail with bail set at $250.
