Here's a blow-by-blow account of the brawl history between the Rays and Red Sox:
Thursday: Above, a day after Boston's Coco Crisp leveled Tampa Bay's Akinori Iwamura with a hard slide at second base, Rays pitcher James Shields hits Crisp in the right thigh with a second-inning pitch. Crisp charges the mound and exchanges ineffective punches with Shields before catcher Dioner Navarro tackles Crisp to the ground. Several Rays, including Jonny Gomes, Carl Crawford and Iwamura, take shots at Crisp as Navarro pins him to the ground. Shields, Gomes and Crisp are ejected.
March 27, 2006: Above, in a late spring training game at Fort Myers, Red Sox pitcher Julian Tavarez tags Joey Gathright out at the plate, then steps on Gathright's arm. As Gathright gets up, he shoves Tavarez away. Tavarez punches twice toward Gathright (no serious contact), and MLB suspended Tavarez for 10 games.
April 24, 2005: After a couple of showboat home runs by Eduardo Perez and David Ortiz earlier in the series at Tropicana Field, Rays reliever Lance Carter throws a pitch behind Manny Ramirez, who then homers. Carter buzzes the next batter, Ortiz, who drops his bat and takes four steps toward the mound. Benches clear and Dewon Brazelton and Trot Nixon scrap. That was the event that prompted Curt Schilling to complain that Lou Piniella didn't have control of his team.
Sept. 28, 2004: After rookie Scott Kazmir pitches 31/3 no-hit innings at Tropicana Field, he hits Ramirez and Kevin Millar in consecutive at-bats. Bronson Arroyo had hit Aubrey Huff and Tino Martinez earlier in the game. Kazmir is ejected after a benches-clearing scrum.
July 18, 2002: At Tropicana Field, Brent Abernathy of Tampa Bay and Ramirez, left, each are hit twice by pitches, resulting in the ejection of Rays reliever Esteban Yan.
Aug. 29, 2000: Below, Pedro Martinez hits Gerald Williams with a pitch to lead off the game. Williams charges the mound and is the first of eight Rays players or coaches ejected that night. Rays pitchers spend most of the rest of the game trying to retaliate. Meanwhile, Pedro has a no-hitter until a ninth-inning single by John Flaherty.
