LAKELAND - A hazardous materials team is working to contain a 200-gallon hydrochloric acid spill at a Lakeland plant.
The spill occurred about 7 a.m. at Parada Processing, located at 1248 George Jenkins Blvd. The Lakeland Fire Department, which responded first, sought help from Polk County's Hazmat team.
A 2,000 gallon tank is leaking 1-2 gallons per minute into a retaining wall and dyke, according to a Polk spokeswoman. The barrier is designed to hold the chemical on Parada's property, and its working, said Heather McClanahan.
No one was injured.
The Hazmat team has special gear designed to protect members from the acid. Members will turn off a valve on the tank, which will likely stop the leak, McClanahan said.
Once the leak is stopped, Parada Processing will use a private contractor to clean up the spilled acid.
According to a plant employee, Parada Processing makes glycerin, McClanahan said.
