NEW PORT RICHEY - About 50 employees of the Pasco County Sheriff's Office are making a difference for troops in Iraq and Afghanistan - one check at a time.
Since May 2007, the employees have had money voluntarily deducted from their biweekly paychecks to help pay postage for care packages sent to the troops. So far, they have donated more than $2,800, said sheriff's office spokesman Kevin Doll.
Sheriff Bob White this week accepted a U.S. flag from Bob Williams, creator and organizer of Our Troops Online, a local support group that sends troops commissary items.
For years, Williams has coordinated the collection and shipment of food, DVD players, microwaves, cigars, cutlery, coffee makers and other wish-list requests to military personnel deployed overseas. He sends about 250 boxes a week, each weighing about 68 pounds. To assist Williams and the Our Troops Online mission, go to www.ourtroops online.com.
