ELMONT, N.Y. - If you had never heard of Rick Dutrow Jr. five weeks ago, you probably have by now.
Dutrow is Big Brown's trainer. Some call him brash. Some say he is cocky. Some refer to him as a classic trash-talker. Others call him dirty, scandalous and egotistical.
During the past month, Dutrow has been the Big Mouth behind Big Brown.
Leading up to the Kentucky Derby five weeks ago, Dutrow made headlines for being so outspoken about Big Brown being the best horse in the field of 20.
Once Big Brown proved Dutrow right, the veteran trainer cranked it up to another level, saying repeatedly that nothing could stop Big Brown from becoming the first Triple Crown winner in 30 years.
Before the Preakness, The Baltimore Sun reported Dutrow has either been fined or suspended for doping horses at least once in each of the past eight years. Earlier this week, Dutrow said he gives each horse in his barn, including Big Brown, an anabolic steroid once a month, though he won't do so this month.
Love him or hate him, Dutrow knows how to make headlines.
"I know there are some people out there that think the wrong way of me, and that is fine," Dutrow said. "But if anyone out there that is not rooting for Big Brown, if they were to meet this horse, I'm sure they would."
