KEYSVILLE - Jean Hagen Pearce was driving on Sunday night when she hit an owl in the middle of Nichols Road, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.
Pearce, 57, was struck by a 2003 Ford Explorer when she got out of her car to check on the bird, deputies say. The impact landed her on the hood of a 2002 Honda van that had stopped at the scene.
Pearce, of Lithia, died at the scene.
The Ford was driven by Elizabeth Louise Gray, 19, of Lithia.
The owl, which had a broken wing and other injuries, was taken to Florida Veterinary Services in Brandon
The investigation was ongoing.
