Regarding "Gates Ousts Air Force Leaders" (front page, June 6):
I commend Defense Secretary Robert Gates for his decisive action in removing Air Force Secretary Michael Wynne and Chief of Staff Gen. Michael Moseley from their posts as a result of the investigation over control of nuclear weapons and their components.
As a former SAC officer who worked around nuclear weapons, I recall the considerable lengths we went to in order to maintain strict control over them. No weapon was ever moved without redundant controls and security. How the two incidents cited could have occurred is profoundly disturbing to me and indicative of serious systemic deficiencies that must be rectified in order to maintain adequate security over the thousands of nuclear weapons that remain in our inventory.
I hope these actions by Gates are just the beginning of a systematic effort to restore the required focus in this critical area.
