NEW PORT RICHEY - The Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Suncoast is recruiting "foster parents" to provide extra short-term TLC to shelter animals before they're ready for adoption.
Foster care training will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday or July 12.
In addition to the free classes, the volunteers will receive pet food and any necessary medications in return for providing a safe environment and plenty of affection and attention.
The program allows pets that are too young or are recovering from medical conditions to receive more individual care than is possible at the shelter.
Foster parents help socialize very young puppies and kittens, and help them transition from baby food to hard food. The volunteers apply ointment, give pills and administer other medications to animals on the mend. And they tend to older pets with noncontagious conditions.
Anyone interested in becoming a foster parent may pick up an application at the shelter, 7734 Congress St., or call Karen Scully at (727) 849-1048 between noon and 6 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.
The SPCA Suncoast has been protecting and caring for stray, abandoned or mistreated animals since 1964. The nonprofit organization relies solely on the community's generosity and support to keep the operation going.
Because the SPCA facility is a no-kill-for-space shelter, staff and volunteers are committed to caring for adoptable pets until they find a loving home.
