Twenty-seven headstones were damaged at Bethel Baptist Church cemetery in Lakeland in the past few days, and Polk County deputies are seeking the community's help to find whoever caused the damage.
"Years of family memories have been broken forever," Sheriff Grady Judd said today in a news release.
The headstones were damaged sometime between 9:30 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. Monday at the east side of the cemetery on Socrum Loop Road, deputies say. Some of the headstones date back to the 1800s.
