TAMPA - Police Chief Stephen Hogue has named a 30-year veteran as the Tampa Police Department's new assistant chief.

Robert Guidara, 54, who has supervised District 3 in East Tampa since 2005, will take over the post vacated by Michael George, who retired last week. The promotion is effective Sunday.

The position is one of two assistant chiefs at the department. Guidara's duties include overseeing the investigations, narcotics and gang units and managing the department's budget of about $120 million.

Hogue said Guidara has gained a reputation throughout his career as an innovative troubleshooter. In 2003, Guidara launched Operation Commitment, a program Mayor Pam Iorio lauded for reducing crime and revitalizing East Tampa. Department statistics show selected reported crimes in District 3 are down about 17 percent since Jan. 1.

A native of Italy, Guidara is a University of Tampa graduate with a master's degree in public administration from Golden Gate University.
