Former Riverview High standout Anthony Ferrara, a seventh-round selection by the St. Louis Cardinals in last week's Major League Baseball amateur draft, has signed with the organization.
The left-handed pitcher said he completed the deal Monday. He reported Tuesday to the team's headquarters in Jupiter, where he will be assigned to the organization's rookie-league affiliate in the Gulf Coast League.
Ferrara, the 215th overall pick, would not disclose the figure of his signing bonus, but he said the Cardinals paid more than the recommended slot amount.
"I got what I was asking for, I could say," he said.
Ferrara, who had signed a baseball scholarship with the University of South Florida, said he informed USF pitching coach Lazer Collazo of his decision to turn professional. He said he thought a lot about the decision to bypass college, but ultimately his desire to be a professional baseball player was something he couldn't turn away from.
"I thought about it a lot, because I'm turning down a pretty darn good program over at USF," Ferrara said.
