PLANT CITY - Firefighters are battling a blaze tonight that has completely engulfed a barn and consumed several large bales of hay, Hillsborough County Fire Rescue officials said.
Twelve units and 24 firefighters responded to 4312 Cork Road, just north of Plant City, and found a fully involved barn fire, county fire rescue spokesman Bruce Delk said.
Because there are no hydrants in the area, crews used four water tenders to control the blaze.
One firefighter was taken to a local hospital as a precaution for heat exhaustion and is in stable condition, Delk said. No other injuries have been reported.
There were no animals in the barn, but stored within was machinery, supplies, bales of hay, a tractor and a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, Delk said. The barn and its contents are a total loss, he said.
The bales of hay have been difficult to extinguish unless they are broken apart, which is labor-intensive and time-consuming, Delk said.
Crews remain on scene breaking the bales apart and extinguishing hot spots. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
