CLEARWATER - A 77-year-old man whose Ford Escort crashed into a tractor-trailer last week has died, police said.
George W. Sturm, no address available, died Tuesday afternoon, six days after the wreck June 4 at 24825 U.S. 19 N., at the Countryside Ford dealership, said Elizabeth Daly-Watts, spokeswoman for Clearwater's public safety spokeswoman.
Sturm was driving north on U.S. 19 as Robert S. Fernandez, 46, no address available, was attempting to back into the parking lot of the dealership to make a delivery at 4:37 a.m., Daly-Watts said. Fernandez's 2005 Freightliner semi-truck was blocking all the highway's northbound lanes.
It does not appear that Sturm tried to avoid the truck, Daly-Watts said.
He was taken to Bayfront Medical Center, and authorities initially said it appeared he didn't suffer life-threatening injuries.
