Bubba Asks Group To Appear On Radio Show, Not At Soldier's Funeral

TAMPA - Radio shock jock Bubba the Love Sponge Clem offered today 30 minutes of free airtime to a conservative Christian group that protests homosexuality at soldiers' funerals.

Clem invited Shirley Phelps of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan., to appear on his morning broadcast in exchange for Phelps' promise not to protest during the Jacksonville funeral of Spc. Quincy J. Green, who died Monday in Iraq.

A memorial for Green will be held Friday night.

Clem has previously offered airtime on his morning show to Phelps and her father, Fred Phelps, if they agreed to not protest at soldiers' funerals in the Tampa Bay area.

According to the church's Web site, the group believes God is punishing the United States for accepting homosexuality.

"We would like to try to ease the suffering of these soldiers' family members as much as we possibly can," Clem said in a statement. "They gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country's freedom, including our freedom of speech."

Excerpts of today's broadcast can be heard on Clem's Web site, www.btls.com.
