More than two dozen firefighters contended with a house fire and natural gas leaks in Sarasota early this morning.
The fire started in a two-story home at 626 Ohio Place just before 2:15 a.m. and spread to a house to the north of it, department spokeswoman Crystal L. Pruitt said. Neither house was occupied.
The first house was destroyed; the second had some fire damage on the second floor and smoke damage throughout, firefighters said.
Both homes are owned by a person who lives out of state, Pruitt said.
Neighbors awakened two people in a house just south of the original fire. Neither was harmed, Pruitt said. Heat damaged the exterior of their house and the pool area.
Firefighters found two natural gas leaks at the scene, which were handled by a special unit of the Sarasota County Fire Department.
No injuries were reported.
The state fire marshal's office is investigating.
