TAMPA - Howard "Budd" Post, founder of one of the state's leading engineering firms and the designer of Miami Lakes, died Tuesday. He was 83.
Post was born in New Jersey and moved to Miami in 1935. In 1960, he formed what eventually became Post, Buckley, Schuh & Jernigan. The company, based in Tampa, specializes in engineering, science and architectural consulting and has some 4,000 employees at more than 80 offices across the country and internationally.
Alex Jernigan, who met Post in 1960, described his colleague as precise, exact and demanding.
"He was an extremely serious person, an extremely efficient person," said Jernigan, one of the four owners of the company. "He expected everybody else to be the same way."
Post retired from PBS&J in 1977, according to a news release from the company, but continued to work on assignments for several more years.
He served as an infantryman during World War II, as a member of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during the Korean War and in the Army Reserves, according to the news release.
His son, Jim Post, said he learned a lot from his father, who influenced his decision to work in construction management.
"He took me with him everywhere," Post said. "It was just an invaluable experience he provided me. He really paved a wonderful path for me."
When not at work, the elder Post enjoyed golf and fishing.
In 2004, he moved to Tampa with his wife, Jeanne. The couple recently celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary.
Post was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease 15 years ago, his son said.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 919 Michigan Ave., Chicago IL 60611; and to the First Presbyterian Church of Miami Springs, 301 Westward Drive, Miami Springs FL 33166.
