LITHIA - An owl injured by a motorist who was killed when she stopped to check on the bird has a broken wing and other injuries, a veterinarian said.
Veterinarian Ali Shreve of Florida Veterinary Specialists-Brandon, who has extensive wildlife rehabilitation experience, is caring for the injured owl.
X-rays show broken bones in the lower part of one wing that may be fixable, but the bird has head-eye injuries that are more of a concern, Sonja Olson, a veterinarian at the center, at 607 Lumsden Professional Court, says in a written statement.
The owl was injured June 8 when Jean Hagen Pearce, 68, hit the bird on Nichols Road east of Keysville Road, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said. She stopped to check on the owl and was struck by a vehicle.
Pearce, who died at the scene, was a longtime animal lover, a neighbor said.
