TAMPA - A young man told sheriff's investigators that he helped throw a brick through a sliding-glass door, burglarized a house and stole a 12-week-old puppy – that later was abandoned, authorities said.
Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office deputies said they are looking for the American pit bull terrier, named Naila, near the Deerfield subdivision at Twelve Oaks Boulevard and Waters Avenue.
About 4 p.m. Tuesday, Teresa Calderon, 36, returned to her 122nd Avenue home and found that a brick had been thrown through her back door. About $2,800 in property was missing, including the puppy.
By 11 p.m. Thursday, sheriff's detectives had tracked down and arrested Joshua Martinez, 19. He acknowledged his involvement and told them the puppy was abandoned, deputies said.
Martinez was charged with burglary, grand theft, criminal mischief and dealing in stolen property. He remained in jail this morning. Records show his bail was set at $25,000.
Detectives expect to make more arrests.
Anyone with information about Naila should call the sheriff's office at (813) 247-8200 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-873-8477.
