Marijuana is more than twice as potent as it was 25 years ago, according to a new study.
The study by the University of Mississippi's Potency Monitoring Project found that levels of THC - the abbreviation for delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana - have reached the highest level since scientific analysis of the drug began in the late 1970s.
The average amount of THC in seized samples is 9.6 percent, compared with a little less than 4 percent in 1983, according to a news release from the Office of National Drug Control Policy.
Authorities say that 14.8 million Americans have used marijuana in the past month, with 4.2 million classified as dependent or abusers, according to the 2006 National Survey on Drug Use and Health.
