TAMPA - About 20 teens from area schools sat in a lifeguard stand today at Dale Mabry Highway and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard looking for distracted drivers.
They spotted a lot of people talking on cell phones, eating, drinking and text messaging. One person was seen dancing while driving.
In case you're wondering, drivers didn't seem to be distracted by the teens on the lifeguard stand, although a couple carloads of teenagers honked and waved.
The students were keeping a running tally of distractions for an 8-foot message board drivers could see while stopped at the intersection.
The Tampa area is No. 1 for teen crashes, according to a recent Allstate study that examined crash data, claims data and the size of teen populations in the top 50 metro areas nationwide.
Auto crashes are the No. 1 killer of teens, and Memorial Day through Labor Day bring the 100 deadliest days of the year for teen drivers.
