Review: Sleeptracker Pro alarm clock watch, $149 or $179 at www.sleeptracker.com>
The pitch: "An innovative device designed to monitor your sleep cycles and awaken you at the optimal moment, leaving your refreshed and ready to start the day."
The skinny: For anyone trying to fit a few more minutes into their day, the Sleeptracker's plan to wake you from a more rested state of sleep sounds dreamy. I'd love to not resent the beeping sound every morning.
Wearing the over-sized wrist watch each night for three weeks wasn't distracting. Setting the watch to work and understanding the underlying concept behind it were a bit more confusing: Set the alarm. Set how long you think it will take you to fall asleep. Set the window of time in which you want the alarm to go off, say within 20 minutes of the actual alarm time. All this information, plus your movement during the night, helps the watch calculate the rhythm of your sleep cycle. Once you figure it out, it takes just a minute more than setting my old school alarm clock.
Most mornings, the Sleeptracker went off within five minutes of my alarm time and yes, I did feel less groggy than usual. The watch stores your sleep patterns through the night and reveals just how often I'm twitching and moving around in my sleep. The more expensive Sleeptracker Pro includes computer software so you can download your sleep history onto a computer. I admit I'm not a big gadget person and didn't feel particularly drawn to a spreadsheet history of my slumber.
This watch looks ideal for business travelers who have to adjust to time zones and funky hotel rooms on a regular basis. Busy moms could benefit too, although for some it may turn into just one more responsibility to deal with before hitting the pillow each night.
