Regarding "Community Colleges Shed Names, Turn From Original Mission" (Our Opinion, June 8):
I am a product of the community college system in California when the mission was affordable - less than $30 a semester - and academic course work lead to entry into the state college/university system. I have received degrees from Texas Christian University and the University of South Florida.
Florida's postsecondary education system is a politician's asset. The movement of USF-St. Petersburg away from the main university is a perfect example. The same has resulted in St. Petersburg College evolving into a four-year institution. However, where are middle- and low-income students to go? As the community colleges morph into a state college, tuition must increase.
"Community college" ought to be deleted from the name; they are not focused on the community student's need for solid academic undergraduate course work leading to entry into the state college/university. And Florida does not have an alternative.
