MELVILLE, N.Y. - You can get an early estimate of your eligibility for federal aid at www .fafsa4caster.ed.gov, in English and Spanish. The site is a place to learn the basics of the federal financial aid program and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
The site links to www .fafsa.ed.gov, where you actually file the FAFSA information online.
FinAid.org offers further explanation of the FAFSA form, an introductory video, filing deadlines and a list of the most common errors.
If you get stuck, seek help. Agyeman Danso, 23, who has finished his first year at Farmingdale State College, said he called the 800 number at www.fafsa.ed.gov (1-800-433-3243) and got a person who walked him through the process.
The person was "very helpful, more than I expected," says Danso, of Long Island, a computer engineering technology major.
Your school's financial aid office is a good resource. Daniel D'Meza, 20, who has finished his second year at Nassau Community College, said that an aid counselor walked him through the process when he started school. "I felt like I could have made mistakes," he said, "and it was safer to see a counselor."
