The Confederate battle flag debate has risen again.

As the Sons of Confederate Veterans prepare to hoist their most prized emblem over a much-traveled spot of Hillsborough County, the spotlight is shining anew on this powerful, controversial symbol.

Its meanings are many. But its evolution may surprise you.

And like the pink triangle, the sign for peace and the swastika, its message changes - depending on when and where you're interpreting it.
