Sweetbay To Anchor Center

NEW TAMPA - Sweetbay Supermarket and LA Fitness will anchor a new shopping center at the southwest corner of Bruce B. Downs Boulevard and County Line Road.

United American Realty, a Tampa-based developer that has built shopping centers throughout Florida, has been planning The Cypress since 2004. The 70-acre site is approved for 350,000 square feet of office and retail use.

The developer has leased a four-story office building on the southern portion of the development, according to its Web site. The retail segment will include two main sections and several detached restaurant buildings.

LA Fitness' clubs typically offer amenities such as indoor swimming pools, full-court basketball, racquetball courts and juice bars. The fitness centers often host recreational basketball leagues and racquetball tournaments in addition to dozens of classes in aerobics, Pilates and yoga.

Sweetbay expects to open its 38,000-square-foot supermarket in the second half of 2009. The store will include a pharmacy and all of the standard features of a typical Sweetbay, spokeswoman Nicole LeBeau said.

The company has no plans to close its other New Tampa store, about three miles south on Bruce B. Downs Boulevard.

Other named tenants include Five Guys, Hungry Howie's and Hardee's.

The center also has leased spaces for a takeout Chinese restaurant, a hair salon and a nail salon, according to the Web site.

Officials at UAR refused to comment on the project, which has changed drastically from its 2005 site plan. The earlier design called for a more pedestrian-oriented shopping center with fountains, shaded walkways and a sculpture garden.
