ST. PETERSBURG - A 41-year-old motorcyclist died today within hours of hitting a guardrail on the Seminole Boulevard onramp to Bay Pines Boulevard, according to the sheriff's office.
Moments before the wreck, a Pinellas County Sheriff's Office deputy tried to stop John Edward D'Angelo for speeding, the sheriff's office said.
D'Angelo, of 6477 17th Ave. N., St. Petersburg, was pronounced dead at 5:17 a.m. at Bayfront Medical Center, the sheriff's office said.
Sunday night, Deputy Joseph McKenzie saw D'Angelo's 2005 Honda motorcycle speeding on Bay Pines Boulevard, the sheriff's office said. He followed the motorcycle onto Seminole Boulevard and tried to stop it, but the motorcyclist, while first appearing to slow down, made a U-turn and headed in the opposite direction, the sheriff's office said.
McKenzie followed but turned off his emergency lights and sirens once he saw the motorcycle recede into the distance, the sheriff's office said. He continued in the same direction, however, and found the wrecked motorcycle, the sheriff's office said.
Sheriff's authorities put the time of the wreck at 11:30 p.m. D'Angelo was wearing a helmet.
An investigation is under way.
