TAMPA - An ambulance on its way to Tampa General Hospital on Davis Islands struck a guardrail on the exit ramp to the hospital and was blocking traffic, police said.
The accident happened at 1 p.m. and caused some liquid to be spilled into Tampa Bay, police spokeswoman Janelle McGregor said. The Coast Guard is investigating whether it's a gas or fuel spill and the best way to clean it up, McGregor said.
The ambulance was transporting a patient. Another ambulance was called to take that person to the hospital.
Vehicles were being diverted into Davis Islands, where they can make a U-turn to reach the hospital or take another alternate route.
The Florida Department of Transportation will check for damage to the bridge.
