Phys-Ed Teacher Arrested On Drug Charges

TAMPA - A physical-education teacher who just finished his first year with the Hillsborough County School District was arrested Sunday on a charge of felony cocaine possession.

Reginald V. Sandilands, 45, of Tampa, told police he is a second-grade teacher at Boyette Springs Elementary School in Riverview. However, the school district said he teaches physical education and is an instructor in after-school programs.
Sandilands began working at the school at the start of the 2007-08 school year, district spokeswoman Linda Cobbe said. Cobbe said she needed to confer with the district's office of professional standards to determine his employment status because school is out for the summer.
Tampa police arrested Sandilands about 7:10 p.m. Sunday during a traffic stop at North 28th Street and East 29th Avenue. Officers stopped his red 2000 Ford F150 pickup after checking the registration and discovering the registered owner's license was suspended, police said.

The officers found Sandilands in possession of a cigarette laced with powder cocaine and a plastic bag containing 0.06 grams of cocaine, police said. Police also charged him with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia and driving with a suspended license, a misdemeanor.

He was released from a Hillsborough County jail Monday after posting $2,750 bail.
