Books, Movies, Games To Keep Youngsters Abuzz

Bug off, monkey around, morph to music and go gaming this summer as libraries and other local venues try to entertain, educate and erase boredom.

Here's a look at what's coming up:

LIBRARIES GOING BUGGY: "Here a Bug, There a Bug" is the Read To Me program at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Hugh Embry Library, 14215 Fourth St., Dade City. At the same time and day, Wesley Chapel's New River Library, 34043 State Road 54 W., is hosting "Cricket in Times Square" as its Read to Me feature.

The free programs are for children ages 1 to 5, require registration and continue each Wednesday through July 23.

Elementary school children are in for a "Bug Bonanza" Thursday when Catch the Reading Bug meets at 10 a.m. at Hugh Embry Library and at 2 p.m. at the New River Library. Registration is required for the free programs, which continue each Thursday through July 24.

Teenagers, meanwhile, can change into avid readers with a Metamorphosis at 6 p.m. Tuesdays through July 22 at Hugh Embry. "Morphing Music Caribbean Style" is the June 24 program. At New River, virtual rock stars can see how they measure up against the competition with a Rock Band tournament and other video gaming from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, continuing weekly through July 24.

MOTION PICTURES IN THE PARK: Dade City's Youth Council will show free flicks at 8 p.m. Saturday at Agnes Lamb Park, Eighth Street and Meridian Avenue. Bring something to sit on, and call (352) 523-5052 for details.

'CAMPERSHIPS' AVAILABLE: Zephyrhills Elks Lodge 2731 is still giving away camp scholarships for July to children ages 9 to 14. For details, call (813) 782-4604.
