Plant City Stepdad Jailed After Punches Fly, Deputies Say

TAMPA - James Royce Smith punched his stepchild's face three times and thrust a screwdriver at another stepchild Monday, Hillsborough County deputies say.

Deputies arrested Smith at 10:08 p.m. Monday.

He was charged with misdemeanor battery and felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The 54-year-old Plant City man told deputies he had a screwdriver on him but denied thrusting it at his stepson, a criminal arrest affidavit states.

Smith remained in Orient Road Jail today. No bail had been set.
