SEFFNER - A private landfill used as a disposal site for debris from stripped-down cars is closing after more than 20 years in operation.
The landfill, on Kingsway Road north of Interstate 4, has served as a collection point for carpeting, upholstery and other castoffs from metal car frames destined for recycling.
The David Joseph Co. has hired Comanco Environmental Corp. in Tampa to cap the hill that looms over a sprinkling of mobile homes along Kingsway near Pruett Road.
Hauling stopped more than a year ago, said Pamela Vazquez, spokeswoman for the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, which oversees landfill permits. The landfill never has been cited for air or groundwater contamination, she said.
Jerry Lewis, a Seffner activist who lives near the site, said he's happy to see the truck traffic go, but worries that his new neighbor will be a borrow pit.
After battling for years to deflect plans for a new pit, Hillsborough County approved a special-use permit for the 40-acre site at Kingsway and Pruett roads. County engineering specialist James Miller said Lorton Industries has not applied for an operating permit.
