DUNDEE - Firefighters swam across a canal today to reach a fire at a rental resort that eventually destroyed a mobile home and a two-story wood house, Polk County Fire Rescue said.
No one was hurt in the 4:45 p.m. blaze at the Drift Inn Resort, 2700 Drift In St., Dundee. The mobile home is vacant and the person who lived in the house managed to get out safely.
Authorities said the nearest hydrant was a mile away and that getting to the fire was hampered by the layout of the resort area. Firefighters ran hoses across a canal and a nearby lake was used as a water source, officials said.
The fire was under control by 6 p.m. but crews remained on scene checking for hot spots.
Twenty-nine firefighters from Polk County Fire Rescue, the Dundee Fire Department and the Lake Wales Fire Department battled the blaze.
The state fire marshal's office was investigating.
