TAMPA - City residents don't have to throw their junk mail in the trash anymore. Now they can chuck it into their recycling bins.
On July 1, recycling trucks will begin picking up several additional categories of recyclables, including junk mail and phone books.
Varghese Jacob, interim director of Tampa's solid waste and program management department, said the two recycling companies the city uses have developed technology that allows them to sort materials better.
The change affects only city residents, but the county already accepts the new materials the city will now recycle, except cereal boxes.
Jacob said he hopes the expansion of the city's list encourages more residents to recycle.
"We wanted to include more items because it makes it easier for people to do," he said.
