DADE CITY - The green Lincoln swerved toward a motorcycle on U.S. 301, and when the biker made an obscene gesture, the stakes were raised, according to sheriff's office and city police reports.
The gesture apparently prompted the Lincoln's driver to chase the motorcyclist about 7 p.m. Tuesday at speeds up to 100 mph, reports state. The motorcyclist pulled into the Dade City Police Department's parking lot, with the Lincoln right behind him.
The Lincoln's driver swore at the motorcyclist, who took off again, a report states. Police Sgt. William Rowe saw the Lincoln drive off, so he followed and tried to pull over the driver on Fifth Street near Martin Luther King Boulevard.
Rowe was able to position his cruiser in front of the Lincoln, but the driver tried to ram him, the report states, and then drove east on King Boulevard. The driver abandoned his car on Pappy Road, off Old Trilby Road. Rowe lost sight of him, but sheriff's office dogs tracked the man to his home at 19519 Equestrian Lane, the report says.
Christopher Alan Akins, 21, faces charges of aggravated assault, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, fleeing to elude, and driving while license suspended or revoked.
A witness said Akins nearly ran over her 10-year-old son on Fourth Street near Live Oak Avenue, the report says.
Akins was being held Wednesday at Land O' Lakes Jail, with bail set at $25,250.
