Sunlake Fills 3 Coaching Spots

LAND O' LAKES - Call it addition by subtraction as Sunlake athletic director Matt McDermott adds another duty to his list of responsibilities while scaling back on another.

McDermott has been named the new Seahawks wrestling coach. He expects to pull back on his duties with the football team as assistant defensive coordinator; he instead will volunteer with the team when he can.

The Seahawks also filled their coaching vacancies in volleyball and cheerleading. Aixa Crespo will take over as the varsity volleyball coach after spending last season as the varsity assistant and junior varsity head coach at Sunlake. And Lindsay Sorci will relocate from Illinois, taking over as varsity cheerleading coach.

Crespo, who was an assistant at Nature Coast and then took over when the Sharks coach quit at midseason, has coached on the club level for several years, McDermott said.

"She wasn't the only consideration we had, obviously," McDermott said of Crespo. "We were looking for the best volleyball coach we could find for our program and she did a great job with both the varsity and JV teams last year. She's already familiar with everything here at Sunlake. Her knowledge of the sport is unparalleled, I believe."

McDermott was the Zephyrhills wrestling coach for four years before he left to take the AD position at Sunlake. He knew it would be impossible to coach wrestling, be a football assistant and get his bearings as a first-time athletic director all at once.

"I went into the wrestling room a few times last year and obviously went to a few tournaments to watch our kids wrestle," McDermott said. "And I missed it. I'm excited to get back into it."

The baseball and girls soccer coaching positions remain unfilled, but McDermott hopes to have that taken care of next week.
