DUNEDIN - A woman attempting to rob a Chinese restaurant Thursday night received a slap on the hand from a feisty employee when she reached for the open cash register, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said.
Darlene Davenport then fled from the Shanghai Express restaurant, but when deputies caught up with her, she received a sterner penalty: a trip to Pinellas County Jail on a robbery charge.
According to deputies, this is what happened about 5:44 p.m. at the restaurant on 2296 Main St.:
Davenport walked into Shanghai Express with her hand in her coat and approached the employee behind the counter. Witnesses said Davenport demanded cash, but the employee refused to surrender any money.
Davenport pushed the employee away and reached for the open register. The employee slapped her hand away.
A restaurant patron followed Davenport and called authorities. Deputies arrested Davenport a few blocks from the restaurant.
No weapon was seen or used during the incident.
Davenport, 43, of 2755 Park Drive Apt. C, Dunedin, is being held at Pinellas County Jail with bail set at $10,000.
