TAMPA - The Polk County Sheriff's Office Sheriff's Training and Respect program – formerly the Polk County Juvenile Boot Camp – will close this month, deputies say.
The program started in 1994 and will close June 30.
It had been funded by the state Department of Juvenile Justice, but it will close due to state budget cuts, a sheriff's office release states.
The 2006 death of teenager Martin Lee Anderson at the Bay County sheriff's boot camp drew attention to the state's residential programs and led to the reformation of boot camps.
The Legislature converted the camps into Sheriff's Training and Respect programs, in which staff could use force only for self-defense or to protect children.
