The Florida Highway Patrol has identified the pedestrian who died after he was struck Thursday night by an ambulance side mirror on State Road 52 in Pasco County.
Joseph R. Smith, 47, of Hudson was headed west on the shoulder of the road at Ehren Cutoff, just west of San Antonio, when he walked in front of the ambulance and was struck by the passenger side mirror about 10 p.m. Thursday, according to a highway patrol news release.
The ambulance immediately returned to the scene and provided emergency care. Smith was flown to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, where he died at 4:10 a.m. Friday.
Smith did not have any identification, troopers said, but the medical examiner's office was able to identify him Friday afternoon. Smith's relatives were notified Saturday, the news release said.
Arthur Gasparrini, 66, of Hudson was driving the ambulance, which sustained about $500 in damage, the news release said. No charges have been filed.
