Chamberlain senior-to-be Dentarius Locke, the Tampa Tribune's Boys Track Athlete of the Year and the Class 4A state champion at 100 meters, grabbed the silver medal in the 100-meter dash at Friday's Nike Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, N.C.
Locke finished second to Hunter Furr of Lewisville, N.C., posting a time of 10.60 seconds into a headwind. Furr took the gold in 10.56. The meet, considered the high school national championships, is being staged at North Carolina A&T University.
"I got a little bit of a block problem [in the final] but, anyway, I did well," Locke said. "I was catching them at the end. It was a real close race."
Locke was making his debut at the prestigious meet. He will also compete in the 200, which will be held today. In Friday's preliminary round of the 100, Locke turned in a lifetime best of 10.43 seconds, the fastest of any of the qualifiers.
Joining Locke at this meet from the area are Hillsborough High's Terrence Mitchell, who competes today in the long jump, and Jesuit's Connor Revord, who will run the mile tonight.
FOOTBALL: Alonso defensive lineman Demonte McAllister received an invitation to play in the Under Armour All-America Game in Orlando on Jan. 4.
McAllister received a call from the game organizers informing him of the honor. The game features some of the top senior football players in the nation. Armwood linebacker Petey Smith received his invitation in April.
"They told me they liked what they saw on film," McAllister said. "It's great. I can't wait. I'm looking forward to playing with the best of the best."
McAllister has received 27 Division I scholarship offers and recently narrowed the field down to his top nine choices, which includes FSU, LSU, Miami and USC.
BASEBALL: Former Hillsborough County standouts Michael Burgess and Tony Thomas each earned midseason all-star recognition in their respective minor leagues.
Burgess, the former Hillsborough High outfielder who was the 49th overall selection in the 2007 MLB draft, was named a South Atlantic League all-star as a member of the Hagerstown Suns, the Washington Nationals' Class A affiliate. Burgess went 0-for-3 in Tuesday's all-star game in Greensboro, N.C., but contributed an RBI in the North's 13-4 rout of the South. Burgess also won the Homerun Derby Contest, slugging 16 homers in three rounds.
Through 66 games this season with the Suns, Burgess is hitting .268 with 13 doubles, 15 homers and 47 RBIs.
Thomas, a former Bloomingdale High and Florida State standout who was a third-round pick by the Chicago Cubs in the 2007 draft, made the Florida State League all-star team. Thomas, currently with the Daytona Cubs, went 0-for-4 in the East's 9-3 loss to the West in the June 14 game in Viera.
Thomas, college baseball's national player of the year in 2007 with the Seminoles, is hitting .281 with 17 doubles, five homers and 25 RBIs.
