OMAHA, Neb. - Tim Federowicz's grand slam in the top of the ninth inning Friday night sent North Carolina to a 7-3 victory over LSU in a College World Series elimination game disrupted twice in two days by rain.
Louis Coleman had intentionally walked Tim Fedroff to load the bases with two outs before Federowicz turned on a 1-1 pitch and drove it into the middle of the stands in left field. It was the first grand slam in the CWS since 2001.
Carolina (53-13) moved to the Bracket 1 final against Fresno State today. The Tar Heels must beat the Bulldogs twice to return to the best-of-three championship series for the third straight year.
Alex White (12-3), who pitched into the eighth inning in Carolina's 8-4 victory over LSU (49-19-1) last Sunday, got his second win of the CWS in his third relief appearance of the season, and first since March.
He worked out of a bases-loaded situation with one out in the top of eighth.
MIAMI: Hurricanes assistant head baseball coach Gino DiMare has resigned.
The school announced in a news release Friday night that DiMare was leaving after 12 years on the Hurricanes coaching staff, where he served as assistant head baseball coach, recruiting coordinator and hitters and outfielders coach.
Coach Jim Morris says his longtime assistant wanted to spend more time with family.
