Regarding "The Next Attack: Coming Soon" (Other Views, June 19):
Cal Thomas decries our Supreme Court's decision granting foreign terrorist detainees the right to access U.S. civilian courts to challenge their detention, "a right that should be reserved only for American citizens."
Says who? He goes on to ponder "who should be held accountable for the blood of Americans killed by terrorists who have gained their freedom courtesy of a federal judge."
Terrorist detention and prosecution may be new ground for America, but that challenge does not change the basic framework of our constitutional government and the manner in which our society views and must treat "all men." Our legal system is designed to look beyond the egregiousness of the crime and to focus on process. The Supreme Court's responsibility is to remind us of our Founders' intent and to preserve individual freedom to the greatest extent possible for the benefit of future generations.
